Salzburg

Travelling south-east past Chiemsee via Bad Reichenhall, where we find the medieval salt works and King Ludwig I’s salt museum, we arrive in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities: Salzburg.

This is Mozart’s birthplace, where he lived and worked and where the bishops of Salzburg guided the city’s fortunes for centuries. The salt which was later transported to Munich and on to Augsburg and Landsberg was also mined here.

The city of Salzburg continues to be a centre of culture and music even today while Salzburg’s city castle is one of the largest fortified castles in Europe.
